While exploring YouTube I came across the video, “How to Build a Personal Curriculum.” I was immediately intrigued, and the more I listened, the more I wanted to try it. I thought to myself, “What a great way to show my children that learning can be fun and lifelong!” I love to encourage learning any chance I can, so I decided I would set one up.
I intentionally started doing my personal curriculum around my kids because my children love to ask questions about anything and everything.
“What are you doing, Mommy?”, “YOU are doing homeschool?”, “Is it fun?” Their curious brains filled with a thousand questions. I love moments like these.
Hoping I would spark inspiration inside them, I showed my boys what I was learning and what I wanted to learn about in the future.
Right now my personal curriculum includes writing, skincare, gardening, and a few other subjects I’ve always wanted to explore. Some are practical, some are just for fun, but they’ve all reminded me that learning doesn’t have to end after school.
Since we started homeschooling three years ago, it’s been difficult to get them to tell me what they would like to learn. I think it’s because they don’t yet realize just how many topics there are to explore. I told them they could learn about anything they wanted to do or know. Learning is one of the most powerful tools they’ll ever have.
Knowledge is a gift, and learning to pursue wisdom is even greater. This is something I would love my boys to take into adulthood. If they don’t know something, I want them to be able to admit it, learn it, and then share that information with others. Basically I want my kids to be big brained beautiful nerds!
As for me, learning new topics and subjects has been exciting. My personal curriculum has been a great way to fill any extra time that’s not doomscrolling. (My brain thanks me for it.)
Over the last month, I’ve realized that learning doesn’t stop when we become adults. In many ways, I’ve learned more as a wife, mother, and homemaker than I ever did sitting in a classroom. Every new skill reminds me that God is still growing me, too.
One of the things I love most about Scripture is how often it encourages us to seek wisdom. Wisdom isn’t something we’re meant to have all at once—it’s something we spend a lifetime pursuing. Every book we read, every skill we practice, every question we ask, and every truth we discover can be another step toward becoming wiser, more capable, and more faithful.
“An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” —Proverbs 18:15
If my children grow up seeing that their mom never stopped learning, I hope they’ll understand that wisdom is worth chasing for the rest of their lives.
